Crossbows are a dwarven invention and basically resemble a bow mounted horizontally on a central post. They are propelled by tensioned sinews or mechanical springs. Crossbow-like weapons have a tiller, a trigger and a drawing mechanism and are fired by aiming at the target and pulling the trigger. The string locking mechanism absorbs the strain, enabling the marksman to take long and careful aim. Ammunition takes the form of rigid bolts with various different attachments or, in the case of stone-bows, stone or metal balls.
